The Main Ingredient

I toured with the Main Ingredient from 1970-1973.  We had a few hits “Everbody plays the fool“, “I just don’t want to be lonely“, “Happiness is just around the Bend“. The Band was Johnny Griffin on Drums, Emir Ksasan on Bass, Harvey Lesesne on Pno and Horn, Billy King on congas and Me on Guitar.

I was 19 years old  and curious and I was playing what was known as the “Chitlin  Circuits”. A string of shows in  the outskirt of towns and every once in a while we would get to play major cities. all in all The R&B revue shows showcased some of the best talent of our times. I totally enjoyed this part of my life and have countless memories of great times as well as desperate moments. While with the Main Ingredient I shared the stage with some of R&B greatest bands. The Chi-lites, The O jays, Edwin Starr, The whispers, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Unifics, The Delfonics, Lil’ Anthony and the Imperials, Ohio Players, James Brown, Abaco Dream, Sly and the Family Stone, General Johnson, Chairman of the Board, Millie Jackson, the list goes on and on..

This band marked the end of my R&B touring as one year later I would be found touring with David Bowie. It was Tony Sylvester, one of the singers in the Main Ingredient that recommended me for the RCA sessions for Lulu, which David was producing.

Absolutely incredible, I do remember those days touring with the band and Luther, Cuba, and Tony. Boy those were some really interesting moments. Love your BLOG. Listen I heard Dennis Davis has past away on April 6, 16. Sorry I missed his last birthday gig in Harlem, I understand you were there, which makes me even more disappointed I didn’t get a chance to say hello to you. Give me a shout-out if you hear anything about a memorial for Dennis, it would be greatly appreciated.
